Steam adds geographic views to developer sales reporting
Valve's reporting update makes it easier to compare unit sales, revenue and key activations across markets.
Valve has added more ways for Steam developers to examine where their games sell and how different types of transactions contribute to performance.
In a September 1 Steamworks announcement, the company described sales-chart controls that switch between units and revenue, with geographic views by region or country. The selected reporting period still determines the chart's timeframe.
The partner site's game landing page also gains charts for in-game sales and Steam key activations. Developers can break down activations geographically, while in-game item sales can be viewed by country and region.
For a studio, the value is in separating questions that an aggregate total can hide. A market with many activated keys may tell a different story from one generating direct sales revenue. The new charts provide views to investigate those differences; they do not establish why a change occurred or which marketing activity caused it.
The update concerns Steam's developer reporting tools. This account is based on Valve's public announcement, without access to any studio's private sales data.
